One of the huge advantages of decorative concrete and resin floors is how easy they are to maintain compared with other types of floor surfaces. But that does not mean that you can toss out your broom and mop. Never use abrasive cleaning liquids, abrasive pads, paint remover, thinners, etc., on your floor they will permanently damage the sealer and penetrate the cement layer beneath, causing irreparable staining and/or damage. Concrete overlays can provide a solution for several problems especially where the substrate surface has scaled or been chipped, where it needs to be used to level minor indentations and fill imperfections, and most importantly, it can be used to cover tiles that are firmly laid without going to the trouble of having to remove them. It is important to note however, that a decorative overlay cannot be used on all existing concrete or tiled floors. If the existing concrete substrate is badly cracked, flaking, re-laminating, splintering, is fragmenting, is damaged by rising efflorescence, where it is resting on unstable soil or there is movement in the substrate, resurfacing with a decorative overlay will not repair structural problems occurring within the substrate as it will not solve your problems. This is when total replacement by casting a new slab will be your best option. When properly installed, it will last as long as the concrete substrate it has been applied on. It can be customized and be installed as seamless or tile-patterned, colour washed, inlaid with logos, motifs and ornamentation in stainless steel, mosaic, vinyl, etc. It is resistant to a wide range of chemicals, sweat and urine. It is hypo-allergenic and therefore ideal for persons with allergies or asthma. It can be applied vertically on walls, stair rises and upright surfaces. It is non-toxic and does not release volatile toxic compounds or VOC’s into the air. It is energy efficient and able to retain heat longer making it ideal for passive solar homes.
