Peter John Massyn has deep experience in tourism, conservation and land reform, particularly as tools for improving the livelihoods of the rural poor. Over the last two decades he has conducted policy research, led numerous consultancies and managed a number of large projects. He is editor and co-author of several publications on conservation, tourism and development. He was responsible for the planning and project management of various eco-lodges with community partners, including the raising of private and concessionary finance. He has provided transaction advice to several protected area agencies and continues to work for the World Bank as an expert adviser. Peter John also has wide experience in the private sector having served in executive positions and on the boards of tourism firms operating in South Africa and Botswana, most recently at RETURNAfrica. Sandra Mombelli, Financial and Administration Manager for the African Safari Foundation (ASF), has worked closely with local communities and international funding organisations for over 16 years. She has facilitated and worked on numerous key projects from 1999 to 2016 in Southern Africa and has facilitated hospitality training programmes for community members in South Africa, Namibia, and Mozambique. She has been active on the ground in terms of supporting various community trusts and facilitating forums for stakeholder engagement as well as facilitating field guide training programmes and computer and administrative training with community organisations at Makuleke, Madikwe and the Kalahari. Sandra Mombelli has also been involved in research and fieldwork, as well as the creation of marketing materials for the ASF and the production of documentaries that highlight the plight of local communities on the African continent. Steve Collins has worked as a consultant in the rural development sector for 23 years specialising in land reform and local economic development linked to natural resources including biofuels, biodiversity, wind energy and other sustainable land uses. He is passionate about involving communities in their own development and making them the focus of NGO, private sector and government development initiatives. One of his core skills is the ability to situate large private sector and government development investments in a rural context so that they stimulate local economic and social development. One of the key areas of his work in the last 10 years has been in establishing CPPPs (Community, Public, Private Partnerships) around specific conservation, renewable energy and ecotourism projects. Most of his current consulting work is the climate change, biodiversity and renewable energy sectors. He is the Biodiversity Resilience Activities Manager for RESILIM (Resilience in the Limpopo River Basin) a USAID funded project aimed at building community and biodiversity adaptation to the impacts of climate change on the Limpopo river basin.
